Internal deceleration injuries caused by high-speed stops

After a serious car accident, many people assume that they’ve escaped major injury if they do not see obvious wounds. They may walk away from a crash, notice no broken bones and believe they are fortunate to have avoided significant harm.

Unfortunately, some of the most dangerous injuries caused by high-speed collisions are not immediately visible. Internal deceleration injuries can occur when the body stops suddenly, but the organs inside continue moving due to powerful G-forces.

Seatbelts save lives, but also cause life-threatening harm

During a high-speed crash, a seatbelt can save a person’s life by preventing ejection from their vehicle and reducing the risk of catastrophic trauma. However, the tremendous forces involved in a sudden stop can still cause internal injuries. While the body is restrained, internal organs such as the liver, spleen, kidneys, intestines and other soft tissues may continue moving within the body cavity before abruptly colliding with surrounding structures.

This mechanism can lead to internal bleeding, organ tears, bowel injuries and other serious medical complications. In some cases, symptoms may not appear immediately. A crash victim may initially experience only soreness, bruising or abdominal discomfort before more serious problems become apparent hours or even days later.

One well-known example is “seatbelt syndrome.” This term refers to a pattern of injuries associated with seatbelt restraint during collisions. Visible bruising or abrasions across the abdomen, chest or shoulder may appear relatively minor, but they can signal significant underlying trauma. Medical providers often treat seatbelt marks as a warning sign because they may indicate damage to internal organs, blood vessels or the digestive system.

Seatbelt syndrome is not merely a medical concern; it can also form the basis of a significant personal injury claim. The absence of a head injury or broken bone does not mean a collision was harmless. Internal deceleration injuries can cause significant physical, emotional and financial consequences. When another driver’s negligence causes a high-speed crash, injured victims may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering and other damages related to these often-hidden injuries.
